Don't just take our word for it, here are some kind words from Graduates of the School and clients in the industry that they have worked with:

Gaby Rodriguez

Gaby RodriguezWhilst working in the media industry for the past 5 years, I decided to develop my skill-set further by seeking out a professional make-up and styling course. I had always had an immense passion for fashion and make-up and after considerable research I felt there was only once place to attend and that was of course 'The School of Make-up'.

After attending my open day it was quite clear they were by far the best school to attend in terms of facilities, tutors, after care and all round professional expertise. I felt totally at home on the course and along the way made some great future work colleagues and friends. The tutors have a vast knowledge of the industry and if you take the course seriously as I did and listen to their invaluable advice you will be on the right path to becoming a make-up artist. Having said that the industry is a hard nut to crack and you have to be determined, extremely hard working and most of all have the right attitude. The course and the tutors confirmed all these things to me but the school is there to help you along your journey and the after care is second to none.

I have been passed many a job through the School and have been fortunate enough to work along side some amazing tutors in such an early stage of my career. I finished the course in May 2010 and have been proactive and lucky enough to work on things such as BBC 3's "Snog Marry Avoid", Professor Green music video, Ok, Hello, Heat, and Coronation Street. I feel like it was fate that lead me to do the course as it has introduced me to so may amazing people and has opened many doors for me, enabling me to move forward in my career. I wouldn't change a thing and I know Elaine and the team are always there for me guiding me in the right direction.

Amy Pilkington

Amy PilkingtonI'd always wanted to be a make-up artist since I was little and despite it always being there in the back of my mind my career took a different path. After 6 years of working overseas I made up my mind it was now or never so I started the arduous task of looking into 'How do I get into it'? Throughout my research I looked at many schools and visited them but as soon as I got in touch with and visited Elaine and School of Make-up I felt at home and knew instantly this was where I wanted to train. Once I had made that decision it was a very exciting time. I took out a CDL and relocated from Newcastle to join the course. I can honestly say the 16 weeks I spent at the school were a joy, I have made new friends for life both with my classmates and the incredibly inspiring tutors. Everyday was different, learning lots of new skills and techniques, some easier than others! Having left the School it is reassuring to know they are always there for help, advice (and a cup of tea) whenever you need it.

Thank you for giving me the skills and confidence to further my career in this industry.

Jayne Whittaker

My name is Jayne and just under 3 years ago I found the wonderful School of Makeup.  I initially completed the 2 week Fashion & Editorial Makeup Course and it was then that I fell in love with School. I took myself off for a year and did bridal, prom and makeover studio work.  I also returned to the School on a couple of occasions for 1-2-1 private tuitions for hair and Asian bridal makeup.

At last I had found my career path, but I knew that if i seriously wanted to carve out a career for myself as a professional Makeup Artist i needed to further my qualification, knowledge and understanding of makeup.  So in September ‘09 I enrolled back at the School for the 16 week Hair & Makeup Course.  I had the most amazing time there, the standard of teaching, beautiful facilities, portfolio week - it's every makeup lover’s dream.

The tutors are just unbelievable they become people you really look up to and admire.  Honestly, I can’t sing their praises enough, especially the hugely talented Jon Mort.  I was taught by the best and they have instilled in me such high ethical working standards, which is a must within the industry.

It didn't just end there since leaving in Jan 10 I have been in close contact with Elaine the Principal of the School, this women in a nutshell is Wonderful and totally dedicated to all of her students. She is always there whenever I need help, a refresher, guidance or reassurance; that's one thing you get from SOM its aftercare!

Since leaving I have done several work experience and trainee placements, I have also worked on a BBC Drama, the new “Captain America” film, “Desperate Measures” feature film, headed the Alex Curran/Forever Unique fashion show, Bench Autumn/Winter fashion show; to name just a few.

I highly recommend to anyone that is thinking of enrolling at SOM to get signed up soon as possible. There is work out there if your prepared to work hard and be committed you will do it, even more so if you've been taught at The School Of Makeup.

I personally have so much to thank Elaine for. If it wasn’t for SOM I would have never found this wonderful new career which is taking my life in a whole new direction now.  Thanks Mother Ship for everything you taught me and thanks for always being there. xxxx

Lara Houghton

Lara HoughtonThe School of Makeup has been the start of a very new and amazing journey personally and for my career, ever since I completed the twelve week media makeup, fashion, hair and casualty effects course back in 2009.

My experience there as a student was both educational and fulfilling, as I was introduced and taught by some of the most interesting, inspiring tutors I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. All of which are still very much involved in the industry today.

When I first attended the School I never imagined that just less than two years later, I would actually be working alongside the same very wonderful tutors on large Box Office films such as `The Awakening' and `Captain America'. This all came about because I made two very important decisions which really helped push my career forward in the right direction.

Move 1 – After finishing my twelve week course, I attended one of the `Career Days' that the School of Makeup provide for further encouragement to past students looking for work. At this particular meeting, we had a guest speaker, which is often arranged for such events. Her name was Joyce Dean, a very lovely lady who has been a makeup artist in the industry for many years, working freelance and for Yorkshire TV. After her very interesting talk, I approached Elaine and asked her if she could chat with Joyce and see if it would be possible for me to gain some voluntary work experience on the next drama Joyce was head of makeup on. Fortunately for me, Joyce agreed! Not only did she give me the two weeks experience, she also very kindly offered other past student's opportunities as well.

After this time spent with Joyce and time spent working on TV commercials with Elaine it occurred to me that whilst I was gaining a wealth of experience, my knowledge of hairdressing needed fulfilling more. I didn't realise until this stage how much dressing and cutting hair was such a large part of a makeup artist's job. Whilst I had covered seven weeks of hair styling and applying wigs in my previous course, I knew I needed to know more.

Move 2 - When Elaine explained to me she was starting separate hairdressing courses, I was thrilled. I signed myself up for the very first course and just before I was due to finish completing the course, more opportunities came my way! Elaine received a phone call from Joyce asking how I was getting on with barbering, and before I knew I was hired on full salary to cut men's and boy's hair for the new `Awakening' film. After which my confidence soared and I received more work straight after completing my course, working for the BBC on the Morecambe & Wise story, again because I could cut hair and that then led to employment on `Captain America'. I walked in and saw all my tutors working along side me and pinched myself just to check it wasn't a dream! I know nothing will compare to their years of experience they have gained through years of hard work and commitment. I still have a long way to go before I get close to their standard, but due to them grouping together as a team of experts for the `School of Makeup', I now have the ability and the confidence to stand alongside them and feel like a valuable member of the team. A dream I never thought would become a reality!

Thank you so much everybody at the School.

Anne Barrington

The decision to retrain for an entirely different career felt easy and liberating for me. Next step, choosing where and how to go about realising my dream job. I did my homework on which school and which course to pursue and having considered all options, I put my trust into School of Make-up. A decision that I have never once questioned or regretted.

I undertook the 16 week make-up and hair styling course and took it a stage further by embarking on the new fast-track 8 week ProTech course for hair cutting and colouring skills which I view as an additional feather to my cap as a professional make-up and hair artist.

I always viewed this new adventure into becoming a freelance professional, as you would a start-up business and took very seriously the value that the course would deliver to me. It is the best investment I have ever made.

I feel lucky to have been brave enough to follow the dream and at the same time, to have been taught by true professionals who still operate in the industry and whose skills are therefore very current and relevant. The tutorship is exceptional, inspirational and professional both during the course and most importantly if not more so, way beyond the final day of your course, you will feel a sense of belonging and community with the support and personal interest taken in you as you embark upon and progress in to your chosen career.

Samantha Parker

Sam ParkerWhen I first went to visit the School I loved everything about it and I knew this was where I wanted to be and signed up for the 16 week course, which I finished in May 2010.

The best thing about the School is that you are taught by real industry professionals with fantastic careers behind them and who still work in industry.   All the tutors bring different careers, different backgrounds and different expertise so we are taught a whole range of knowledge by a whole range of tutors.

Not only are we taught about make-up and hair and application and practice but we are also taught vital information about the make-up industry and what will happen once we finished the course and were out in the real world - how to find jobs and set etiquette.  One thing that was drilled into me from even my first ever visit to the School was the aftercare and that is something that was truly carried through after I finished.   It's the same for all students no matter when you finished and what course you did.  Of course, no one can talk about this fantastic School with mentioning the amazing principal and mentor, Elaine.  Quite possibly the most inspirational and caring person I have ever met, Elaine is with you from day one until long after you leave the School.  Not only is she an AMAZING make-up artist having worked with some of the best names is showbiz, she makes the School feel like a second home.  It is said that you will feel part of a team whilst you're at School but it's more like part of a family. Elaine lives and breathes the School’s motto and is always there for her students to assist any problem big or small.

Since leaving School I have worked hard to make it in the fashion industry and have done many fashion shows, magazine shoots and editorial work. I have also had a fantastic week doing Beauty and the Beast with some more students from the School including students who had left over 2 years ago.  It just goes to show how everyone becomes a team.

Being at the School was the best 16 weeks of my life and I wouldn't change a single second of my time there.  It truly changed my life and started me on my career doing what I love.  I know I will always be welcomed back with open arms.  I would like to thanks the incredible team for all their hard work and help and I am forever grateful for what they have done for me.

Congratulations on 10 years of being the best!

Ryan HesfordOver the past few years whilst working on the Iceland Advertising Campaign, I have had the pleasure of working with Elaine & many of her excellent Graduates. The training and expertise that is offered at Elaine's school is evidently second to none. If you are serious about the 'quality' of your training and aftercare then in my opinion the choice is simple! While others try to imitate, there is only one School Of Make-up!

Jason Donovan

Jason Donovan Elaine is one of the most amazing make-up artists I have worked with. She is a talented, fun, kind and caring person and I have no wonder that she has achieved the success and high regard she has within industry. Elaine's students have attended jobs we have worked on together and have display the skill and professionalism that I would expect of any experienced make-up artist. They are a credit to Elaine and evidence of the amazing training they have received at the School of Make-up.

Stacey Ambler

I chose the 16 week course which I started in may 2008 and finished September. I decided to go to the school of makeup because I first went as a model on one of the portfolio days and when I met the tutors and students and saw what they did and the standard of the work, I decided I wanted a change of career. Then I found that all the tutors were all high in there careers and still worked in the industry's knew I could invest in school to give me a good start to a new career.

My time at the school was fantastic and I learnt everything I needed to know to get started in the industry, also all the equipment for me to use at the school was all the latest. Since leaving the school I went on work experience with Elaine on the Iceland advert which was a fantastic experience and gave me confidence that I could do the job, she also got me to know people in the industry and after that I have had a very successful career so far.

After leaving the school of makeup Elaine and all the tutors are always there when ever you need advise or just need to talk, which is a great support and gives you piece of mind that your not on your own.

I would recommend School of makeup to anyone wanting to start a career as a hair and makeup artist because it's a high standard school with fabulous tutors that teach you everything you need to know and the quality of the equipment for you to train with is of a very high standard.

Ryan Hesford

Ryan Hesford I trained at the School of Make-Up in August 2008, it was the best experience of my life and since leaving it has been a whirlwind of work within tv / film / fashion shows. It has also led me to working abroad in Tokyo / Germany / New York. All an amazing experience and wouldn't have been possible without you guys. I also got a job straight away with Mac Cosmetics which has opened many doors - all due to the fab school.

Amy Boyd

Amy Boyd Dear School of Make-Up, I am just dropping a note to say a massive thank you for your wonderful training, expertise and care about my education in hair and make-up! Your training has given me undiscovered abilities and provided me the keys to one day become a successful make-up artist.

When I decided to train in media hair and make-up I wanted to go to the best school possible so I researched and compared a number of different make-up schools throughout the country. Coming to School of Make-Up and looking round the beautiful studios prior to beginning the 16 week course I was able to discuss all the questions and concerns I had. Quite simply, after speaking with Elaine my decision was sealed! Not only is Elaine a great teacher, but she is inspiringly creative, and so approachable and knowledgeable, and I want to thank her for creating this program with such a fun environment! Our small class size made the entire course more personal and it allowed each of us to receive so much attention and feedback on our work. As a group we all got on extremely well and as well as working hard together we also laughed very very hard together too. All of the talented tutors shared with us their wealth of experience from all fields of the make-up industry and shared all their trade secrets!

And hopefully one day when I become brilliantly successful (!?!?) I will always give Elaine, Emma, Jo, Amanda and Jon the credit for creating such a terrific school. Now I just need to focus! But you've given me the confidence to succeed so I hope I make you proud!

With deepest appreciation,Amy

Adele Roberts

Adele Roberts I knew the School of Makeup was right for me, as I had heard so many good reviews about it. The moment I walked into the school I knew I was going to really enjoy the course, because the tutors and the other students made me feel really welcome, and they were all so friendly. I attended the 12 week combined Media Makeup and Hair course, it was a brilliant and very intensive course which was taught by the very best Makeup Artists in the industry. The tutors are amazing Makeup Artists who have many years experience behind them. I know I have been taught by the best in the industry as the level of teaching was to such a high standard. I have learnt so much and now feel I can go into this industry with confidence. The tutors are very supportive and offer brilliant aftercare, you never leave the school of makeup as they are always there if you need them, for advice, guidance and support. My 12 weeks at the School of Makeup has been fantastic, it's the best thing I have ever done, and I have enjoyed every minute of it. I'm now looking forward to a exciting future thanks to the School of Makeup.

Sam Collins

Sam CollinsI attended the School of make-up in the winter of 2005 hoping to learn all the skills required to become a make-up artist, little did I know I would learn far more than this. Besides the fantastic knowledge and skills I learnt from the excellent tutors, I also learnt how to apply them to the industry, how to find work and how to adapt to many different situations.

The most important skill I felt I learnt at the school was how to listen to what your client needs, as well as how important your personality is in such a specialised industry. Being taught by such personalities made me realise very quickly how they had become so successful at their profession.

The most beneficial factor of attending the school of make-up is the aftercare you receive. Elaine's positivity and support has boosted me endless times throughout my career and her unfaltering advice and consideration has with no doubt been a definite factor in my continuing success. From the support I have received I have gone on to work on projects for Mamas and Papas, New look, Debenhams, Iceland and L'Oreal. My job now takes me all over the world and I truly love what I do.

I don't think there could possibly be a better place to learn and start a career in Make-up.

Thank you to Elaine and her fabulous team at the school of make-up I am eternally grateful for the support you have given me.

Amy Leigh Crank

Amy Leigh Crank Having already done a 2 year Makeup course in a local college I felt I didn't learn enough skills to make it confidently into the industry therefore I decided to go to The school of Makeup and get what you pay for. The knowledge and skill set you need in order to make it in the industry and be professional. The course is definitely value for money and worth every penny. The tutors are absolutely fantastic and are there to teach as well as help, support and guide you down the right path to get the makeup career you have always wanted! If you are serious about being a makeup artist then by going to this school you will get to where you want. Whether doing a short or long course at the school you get enough knowledge to go out into the industry confidently. The tutors all still work in the industry alongside teaching and pass their knowledge of how the industry is now and prepare you for what to expect as the makeup industry is forever changing and evolving. Each tutor has expertise within the makeup field whether it be fashion and editorial to Period Makeup and Casualty and Special Fx every area gets covered. Elaine the school principle is absolutely fantastic! You couldn't ask for a better mentor. She's knows everything about the industry and there isn't a question she couldn't answer...within reason of course :-) She has created a school which has a friendly and family atmosphere and you always have the support if needed even after you have finished the course. Amanda is always there to pass on jobs and keep you informed on new courses which the school has to offer. She is there for you throughout the course if you need help or advise and after you leave. I can honestly say you can't get a better school with the skill base this one has to offer within the North West or be it England. I have loved being part of the school and I am happy I did the course as I now feel I can do anything thrown at me whilst having fun at the same time as that is what being a makeup artist is all about!

If you are serious in becoming a makeup artist then this course is what you need, it has everything all rolled into one.

You will be always be a part of the school even when you leave as they are always seeing how you are and you can always pop in to see Elaine or any of the other tutors. You can also build a portfolio whilst there for going into the industry which is fantastic to set you up ready for potential clients which many courses don't offer. I learnt more in 16 weeks than I did in two years on my previous course. It is definitely worth the money and time to become a professional Makeup and Hair artist that you have always wanted to be. I would recommend to anyone who has a passion for Makeup and hair and are wanting to do this for a profession. I loved every minute of my experience at the School of Makeup and consider it my second home :-) Thank you to everyone there and to the tutors for teaching me the best skills and knowledge within the industry.

The venue of the school is brilliant, it's in a lovely old mill down a small cobbled street. inside is highly modern, stylish and inspiring to work and learn in. there are learning equipment such as books for reference and access to computers within the common room of the school. The students have their own area to hang out at dinner, look on the web and their own kitchen. Everything is there that you need for the course. All Makeup is provided whilst learning so you don't need to use the ones in the kit which is given. Everything you could possibly need is at the school, also on portfolio week a brilliant photographer is used to create high quality prints. Anton is a lovely guy who offers his skills and knowledge to make your work look fantastic and stand out for your portfolio. There is also a car park if you drive so you don't need to worry about parking whilst on the course.

There is an excellent atmosphere within the school and a really good strong bond with students. Everyone is friendly and have lots in common so there is always someone to chat to. I looked forward to every day and learnt something different every day which is what it's all about. The group I was with see each other outside the school , go out and socialise and also we all still work together and pass on jobs to each other which is key working in the close net community of the Makeup world :-)
